International Conference Hosted by OCU & OIU

This August 4-8, Catherine Lutz, Brown University professor and author of many books, including her most recent edited volume, The Bases of Empire: The Struggle Against U.S. Military Posts, will visit Okinawa to deliver a keynote address for the forthcoming Dialogue Under Occupation V conference

Joining her will be Iha, Yoichi (伊波 洋一), former Mayor of Ginowan City (前宜野湾市長), who will participate in a panel discussion of Okinawa's current issues. Arasaki, Moriteru (新崎盛暉), Emeritus Professor at Okinawa University will also be giving a keynote address on the continuing challenges that Okinawa continues to face.  Key panelists will include author and American University professor David Vine, as well as Olivier Bancoult Chairman of the Chagos Refugee Group in Mauritius. A special memorial lecture will also be given by Yoshida, Kensei (吉田 健正), Former Professor of Obirin University (元桜美林大学教授),  in honor of the late Chalmers Johnson whose many books chronicle the history of East Asia, the dangers of hegemony, and the struggle for Okinawan self-determination. Organizers from Okinawa Christian University, Okinawa International University, Meio University, and University of the Ryukyus hope to see widespread participation.
